▪ The first fruits of co operation between Iveco and Spanish truck builder Pegaso will begin in September when production of the TurboDaily van and chassis-cab range is due to start at Pegaso's Valladolid plant.
Pegaso-built Dailys will be sold inside and outside of Spain, helping to ease the strain on Iveco's other TurboDaily assembly plant in Italy, which is running close to its full capacity.
Iveco now holds a 60% stake in Pegaso's parent company, Enasa, following a bid made last September.
In a move to extend the sales potential of the Daily in Spain Valladolid-built models will be sold through local Spanish Iveco dealers badged as an Iveco, but through Pegaso distributors as a Pegaso. This is reminiscent of the badge engineering exercise conducted by Citroen, Peugeot Talbot and Fiat with the SEVEL van in the UK.
With the introduction of Spanish-built Dailys in Pegaso's home market there will also be a gradual phasing out of the Ekus range, based on the Volkswagen LT van and chassis-cab, and built by Pegaso under agreement with MAN-VW. The Spanish truck and bus builder plans to exhibit a Pegaso-badged Daily at the Barcelona truck show in May.
In addition to offering the latest TurboDaily range, Pegaso is also to import the Yugoslavian version of the old Daily model, called the Duty, which will be offered through Pegaso dealers in Spain as a more robust alternative.
