ROAD Haulage Association national chairman Ken Rogers has struck a blow for the extension of private enterprise by telling a Nottingham audience last week that hauliers should try to take over local authorities'transport fleets.
Private operators can run council vehicles more effectively and at lower costs than the councils he claimed.
He also suggests that this could be backed up by the low wage settlements which the haulage industry reached, espe cially when compared with the public sector.
An RHA spokesman added this week that, with around 6,000 lorries laid up at the moment through lack of work, the scope for expansion into other activities is great.
And the scope for new markets for hauliers could be widened further, following
Transport Secretary Norman Fowler's announcement last week that GoVernment waste expert Sir Derek Rayner has been asked to con4ider the possibility of using priviate contractors for snow and ice clearance on motorways aid trunk roads.
