Moderate road speed, good manoeuvrability, comfortable ride, tilt cab, gross weight within 90 per cent of chassis and tyre makers' recommended maximum. Unladen weight not over 5 tons, payload 9.5 to 10 tons.

Maximum speed 50 mph fully laden; 0-40mph is 35 sec with warm engine; ability to restart on 1 in 5 slope. Service brakes able to stop vehicle in 50ft from 30mph on dry road (0.6g) with pedal pressure within 154 lb.

Chassis must allow for vehicle standing laden for perhaps 18 hours. Preference for twin-steer layout, turning circle between kerbs not exceeding 55ft; ground clearance at feast 9 in except at axle casing; a 21 ft long platform body space with 371/2/39 in loading height or lower.
