NEW NOISE levels for trucks are set to be phased in from 2014 with a reduction to a maximum 78dB by 2017.
The European Commission’s proposals affect all vehicles. The target reduction for heavy vehicles is 3dB, with the limit lowered by 1dB in 2014 and a further 2dB in 2017. Other vehicles must cut noise emissions by 4dB by 2017, setting a new limit of 68dB.
The proposal has been discussed by the European Parliament’s environment and transport committees with a parliamentary vote due in October.
“There will be a new testing method for measuring the sound level for light, medium and heavy vehicles,” says MEP Miroslav Ouzky, the environment committee’s rapporteur (sponsor) for the proposal. “I recognise that vehicle noise has multiple sources including the engine, tyres, road surface and aerodynamic noise.” Manufacturers can see the importance of quieter vehicles. “We do everything we can to reduce noise level,” says a Mercedes-Benz spokesman.
“The new Actros range has a revised suspension that allows the vehicle to pass over the road in a smoother fashion.” A Daf Trucks spokesman says: “It’s often the body or trailer that makes the most noise. However, it is important that we reduce noise.” He points to trials of hybrid trucks in Holland that use diesel on the motorway and switch to electricity for town deliveries.
