• BT carried out an exercise to see if the new Ford Transits and their DuraTorq diesel engines could deliver appreciably better fuel consumption than the older models with their 2.5Di engines. The new breed was represented by a front-wheeldrive van with the 2.0-litre DuraTorq unit and laden to 2.5 tonnes, and by a rearwheel-drive chassis-cab grossing 3.2 tonnes, equipped with a rakish Luton body and the 2.4-litre engine. The equivalent old models bettered these newcomers by about one mpg in each case—but it wasn't exactly a fair fight because the two new Transits had each covered barely a few hundred miles and were obviously still tight.
Apparently, Ford has led BT to believe that, given time, the DuraTorq engines should be about 15% more economical than the 2.5Di engine.
