• The Road Haulage Association has defended the appointment of Stephen Byers as head of the Department of Transport, Local Government & the Regions after he faced a barrage of criticism in the press for having never held a driver's licence.
"It is said that because he doesn't have a licence then he won't know what is happening on the roads," says a spokesperson. 'What's the big deal? Just by being a passenger and living in London he will know. This is the start of the silly season of reporting."
Byers quaffed for a provisional licence 31 years ago but reportedly has never had any driving lessons.
The RHA, however, has offered to give Byers a belated start to his driving career. "If Mr Byers wants to learn then the RHA Training Services will be at his disposal," says the spokesperson.
