Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Profits for the Wincanton Group plunged almost 22% for the year ended 31 March, despite a rise in profits for distribution work.

Falling vehicle demand hit the group's CV sales and contract-hire interests. Arlington Commercial vehicles sales dropped from 9,753 to 9,334 and vehicle contract-hire fell by 352 to 2,269.

Wincanton has closed its Leyland Daf Wilsden site and has withdrawn from bus and coach sales "as this has limited opportunities for the future", says group managing director David Yeomans.

Wincanton's sister transport firm LCD, which recently lost a Boots contract, is spend ing 24m on a site in Bristol supermarket giant Sainsbury.

It will become UCD's largest depot.

A network of three sites are also being developed for Gateway as part of a contract which begins this week.
