• A new intermodal distribution company called Charterail has been set up in north-west London.
It is the first privately owned firm to use British Rail's network to carry freight.
The Cricklewood-based firm has ordered 40 piggyback wagons from Tiphook Rail and 80 curtain-sided trailers from Central Trailer Rentco in a 10year rental deal.
It has already won a contract to move Pedigree Pet Foods' products from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire to Cricklewood by rail.
From Cricklewood the food is delivered by road using subcontractors including Taylor Barnard Transport Services of Mendlesham, Suffolk, which handles deliveries in SouthEast London.
Charterail plans to appoint more sub-contractors, but it declines to disclose any other details.
