Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Like Mr. H. A. Cypher (CM June 14-) I have been waiting for opinions on the new Road Haulage Association symbol.

Speaking as a•graphic designer with a great interest in lorries, I feel that this symbol, apart from being reminiscent of several others, does not do its job. It was specified in the brief that the road haulage industry should be represented, but a feeling shared by myself and several colleagues is that movement only is implied in Mr. Bright's design. The "symbolic" use of the disc is not sufficient to represent the wheel as its use with the other abstract shapes makes the meaning more than a little obscure. One feels that there should be some element in the design which definitely indicates its connection with the road.

I am very much in favour of a new symbol for the RHA but I think one more representative of the industry could have been found. ROYSTON E. MEAD, Hull, Yorks.
