Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In your issue of June 14, you advise your readers that the haulage firm of F. Lewis and Sons of Aston (Birmingham) have made an agreement with the Transport and General Workers' Union for their drivers to run at the maximum permitted speed of 40 mph, on restricted roads: and to do 70 mph, on motorways. This is quite untrue and has caused some embarrassment to myself amongst my colleagues.

Would you be so good as to correct this wrong impression and print the facts ? They are, that our members have agreed to run at a maximum speed of 28 mph, on restricted roads and 40 mph, on motorways. in both cases where it is safe and practicable to do so.

For your information, we have now signed agreements with 25 haulage firms on the same lines as the F. Lewis agreement and I set out herewith the basic rates of pay: per hour Up to 5 tons £17 10s Od 8s 9c1 5 to 10 tons £17 19s 3d 8s 114d 10 to 15 tons £18 8s 6d 9s 2-1-cl 15 to 18 tons £18 15s 6d 9s 44-d Over 18 tons £19 8s Od 9s 81d We are also in negotiation with seven Clicence firms from various industries and agreement is also expected with the car transporter firms in a few weeks' time. In the case of the latter, basic rates of 10s 7d per hour will be paid to drivers of the larger transporters. A. D. LAW, Regional Trade Group Secretary, TGWU, Transport House.
