• The Traders Road Transport Association has had confirmation by the Ministry of Transport that, for Transport Bill purposes, the unladen weight of a tractive unit (tractor) will conform with section 255 of the Road Traffic Act 1960.
The point arises because the licensing sections of the Bill define the weight of an articulated vehicle as the sum of the unladen weight of the tractive unit and the plated weight of the semi-trailer. The section 255 definition includes in unladen weight the vehicle and its body and all parts which are necessary or ordinarily used when the vehicle is working on a road— but it excludes the weight of water, fuel, accumulators and loose tools and equipment.
