• A new container service will be introduced from about mid-1970 to link the BR Freightliner service with Eire and Ulster. As a preliminary step to the major scheme, BR is increasing substantially the capacity of the limited high-capacity container services which it is now providing between London and Birmingham and all parts of Ireland through the ports of Heysham, Holyhead, Belfast and Dublin. The decision follows a report by McKinsey and Co. on the potential of Irish Sea traffic.
British Railways Board and the trade unions whose members are involved are discussing the matter which will then be referred to the Minister of Transport for final approval.
