Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

St. Austell by lain Sherriff

• Ask a Cornishman who will be the 1968 Lorry Driver of the Year and ifs likely he will say Joe Mennear. This driver from Heavy Transport Ltd. has already competed in three national finals and this year he goes to Bramcote on September 8 as a member of the St. Austell team.

Last Sunday was the first time St. Austell had been an eliminating centre but an onlooker would never have guessed. The organization was well-nigh perfect and snags which did arise were dealt with immediately to ensure a smooth-running competition. The result was the product of Mr. J. Newman and Mr. A. Judd who have been visiting other centres, putting their observations on tape, and so avoiding many pitfalls.

Those who thought that Heavy Transport would run away with all the prizes were confounded. The GPO, a food distributor, the RAF and a small haulier all figured in the prize list. The story of the haulier is perhaps unique in that he bought his vehicle from Heavy Transport, won his class and in so doing defeated a Heavy Transport driver, S.A.C. Patterson is only the second Serviceman to reach the final this year where he will be competing against a fellow Scot for the Service driver's trophy.

Proof that training pays off is demonstrated in the fact that Heavy Transport, whose men have all to undergo training, collected five class prizes, the team prize and the supreme award. It was little wonder that the corn

pany's managing director, Mr. L. Matthews, was pleased but he pointed out that his real pleasure lay in the fact that St. Austell was now an established test centre. After last weekend I would say that this new centre is a real acquisition to the LDOY Competition.
