Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

VOA the second year the Leeds Lorry I Driver overall winner was decided by a run-off on identical Bedford TK vans. This year he proved to be Staff Sgt. F. T. Gatecliffe, 521 Company, R.A.S.C. (T.A.), who had been driving an Army Bedford in the class competition. In the decider Gatecliffe lost 106 points, giving him a 2-point advantage over B. Watt (Brian Watt Transport, Austin). These two were a good way ahead of the remaining finalists.

After 10 years in the game—Leeds was the first of the Northern eliminating centres—the organizers have obviously little to learn and last Sunday's 156strong entry ran through without a hitch.

Gatecliffe led the 521 Company R.A.S.C. (T.A,) team in a repeat of its 1961 victory, and the salutes which the deputy Lord Mayor. Cllr. Lawrence Turnbull, received from Sgts. Gatecliffe, L. Dalton and P. Dalby at the prize presentation were every bitas smart as those two years ago. In previous years the event had been run by the Leeds City Police in conjunction with the Road Safety Committee of the City Council, but when the Council would no longer assist, a new committee was formed of members drawn from local transport organizations and other interested bodies. Its first promotion was extremely thorough, and by way of adding interest for the spectators it had arranged a display of historic commercial vehicles which were put through their paces in the various tests.

At Leeds there is a special roadmanship trophy, which was won by W. Hall (Tate and Lyle Transport Ltd.), Bedford, the leader of Class Fl. His closest rival in this section was A. Palfreyman (Regent Oil Co. Ltd.), Foden, with a loss of 8-2 on the code and 6 on the road. Actually, Palfreyman tied for the lead in Class E2 with D. Partridge (Smith and Robinson (Leeds) Ltd.), A.E.C., but secured a class verdict under the rule that ties are decided by performance on the road section.

The road event included one specially searching test. There was a halt on a gradient where competitors were asked what was the last official road sign they had seen. Whilst they were answering this question a second official was checking that the vehicle was not slipping back. When they were restarted only a tiny majority gave the moving-off signal.

There were 27 entrants (24 civilian and 3 Army) in the team section, in which 521 Company R.A.S.C. (T.A.) secured a clear-cut victory over the Leeds drivers of the British Oxygen Co. Ltd., C. P. Haxby .(Foden), R. E. James (Bedford) and C. Watson (Albion), whose score was 492. Martins the Cleaners were third with 587.

Few serious errors were detected in the final when the 11 class winners met for the run-off. Gatecliffe was marginally down as compared with Watt on the kerb and loading-bay tests, but more than counterbalanced this by superiority of width judging. Markings for the other competitors were: Bowland 152, Lupton 154, Hall 166, Walker 182, Maddison 202, Smith 235, Palfreyman 238, Bennett 243, and Moxon 307. A.T.
