THE use of ammoniacal liquor as a fertilizer has advanced greatly in the past few years. The usual method of application is to trickle the liquor out of open-ended nozzles attached to a sprasbar on a tank trailer towed by a tractor.
To transport the fertilizer from the gas works at Hilsea, Portsmouth, to farms, a special road tanker was supplied to the Southern Gas Board by United Service Garages (Portsmouth), Ltd.
The vehicle is based on a Bedford R-type four-wheel-drive chassis and a Perkins R6 oil engine has been installed by the suppliers. In place of the standard 11.00-20-in. (12-ply) tyres, 12.00-20-in, (14-ply) cross-country tyres have been fitted, whilst the road springs have been modified to take additional weight.
A 1.200-gal, tank is employed, with pumping gear on the near side driven through a power take-off on the transfer box: An overall fuel-consumption rate of 11-12 m.p.g. is being obtained under conditions which include onand offthe-road working, as well as the pumping of liquor from the tank.
Fully laden, the vehicle weighs 10 tons 16+ cwt., of which the load represents 5 torts 14 cwt.
