UK's biggest container port at Thurrock's Shellhaven site received a major boost last week when the government gave the strongest indication yet that it would approve the proposals.

This news has given encouragement to other ports. such as Felixstowe, which is also in urgent need of deep sea container expansion.

Transport Minister Derek Twigg says the £1.5bn London Gateway Port development in Essex will get the go ahead as long as the plans include provision for infrastructure to handle traffic generated by the port.

P&O's chief executive says the proposalswill ensure the national need for more container capacity is met for "at least the next I °years". "We are delighted with the announcements." he adds. "We are studying the details, including those relating to highways issues. We plan to move ahead with both schemes as soon as possible."

Andrew Trail]. the FTA's head of rail freight, maritime and air policy, says the proposal's apparent lack of explanation over how it intends to handle traffic is "curlous-:"I'm a bit surprised sufficient attention to that detail hadn't been put into the planning proposal."
