more than £74m a year, according to latest statistics from the West Midlands truck crime unit Operation Indicate.

DCI Carl Foulkes says truck crime is rarely put at the top of the policing agenda as it accounts for only 0.7% of total vehicle crime. But the financial implications are huge, with the cost of a lost load often running into thousands of pounds before the cost of the vehicle is even taken into account.

"Criminals see stealing a trailer-load of goods as a low-risk crime," he adds. "If they don't use force and take it from a yard they would receive a far lower sentence than if they were robbing a cash-in-transit van, but the financial rewards are bigger.

"A load of body spray could be worth over 00,000 and its easy to get a load like that out into the system and sold on. and then there's the truck on top of that.

"Truck crime can haveadevastating effect on a haulier beyond just losing his truck and cargo. If he can't provide the customer with the goods then they may look to another haulier to carry any future loads.
