In the latest twist to the EGR vs SCR battle to meet the Euro-4 and 5 emissions levels, customer demand in Germany has led MAN to take an interim AdBlue/SCR route to Euro-5.

Although MAN is working on an [GA-based solution, it will arrive too late to satisfy the current demand for Euro-5 trucks. This has been boosted by the discounts offered to Euro-5 trucks by Germany's Maut road tolling scheme.

MAN's arch-rival Mercedes-Benz currently has the market to itself.

The Maut system itself looks set for an early shake-up. Although things may change as a result of the impending election, Germany is expected to revamp its tolling structure in 2006.

The main differences are expected to be the merging of the Euro-4 and 5 levels, and a doubling of the toll differential between the lowest and highest rates. The Maut system is expected to be extended to major non-autobahn roads.

Operators with first-generation on-board toll-collection units will have to change them for a new version which is due to be launched shortly. The old units will cease to work at the start of 2006.

The new German government is also expected to introduce a system of coloured screen stickers or registration plates to identify the various emissions standards. This will enable enforcement of schemes to reduce the amount of small particulates, or "fine dust", as urban air quality becomes a major issue in Germany,
