A truck driver faked his own kidnapping as part of a scam to steal his truck and its load of electrical goods, Stafford Crown Court heard. Gurthan Samra of Wolverhampton. who was employed by agency Pro-Active Personnel based at the Powerhouse distribution centre, Walsall, claimed he had been robbed at gunpoint.
Samra denies stealing the truck and its contents on 28 April last year. He told police he was attacked by three gunmen.
His co-defendants, Mthael Fergusson of Wolverhampton and John Sullivan of Tipton, deny the charge and perverting the course of justice the day after the theft. Samra is also charged with making a false witness statement.
Nick Tatlow, prosecuting, said Samra was delivering E18,000 of electrical appliances to Leeds. Later that day the empty truck arrived in Stoke-on-Trent where it was set on fire.
Tatlow told the jury: "Samra himself did not turn up until the following afternoon and that was in a country lane near Kettering. His hands and feet were tied. With the help of a passer-by he contacted the police and gave them a story which was entirely fictional."
The hearing was adjourned to 5 December.
