• Wreckers International has increased the GTW of a double-drive Seddon Atkinson 4-11 tractive unit to 65 tonnes by adding an extra steering axle with enough loading tolerance to work as a heavy-duty wrecker.
The two axles are said to provide enough ballast within the five metre wheelbase for recovery operations.
An Interstater Mk 2A underreach lifting boom gives a fully extended lifting capacity of eight tonnes, rising to 20 tonnes in the close position. Twin planetary winches are rated at 11.5 tonnes each.
The eight-wheeler is powered by a 14-litre Cummins engine rated at 231kW and uses Norde rubber suspension on the drive axles.
It is operating with J and K Recovery out of Todclington Services on the Ml. 0 Further north, Greater Manchester Buses, which is reputed to run the largest bus fleet outside London, is operating what it believes is the first Leyland Daf Constructor 8x 4 wrecker for bus and coach recovery.
The Scammell 30.26 is fitted with a 10.5-tonne capacity (fully extended) Mk2 Interstater under-reach lift to give a damage-free lift to integral-type buses.
A 195kW (262hp) Leyland TL11 C diesel drives the Rockwell SSHD 19.3-tonnerated bogie with 4.89:1 final drive through a ZF 6HP600 six-speed automatic transmission. GMB's 8 x 4 Interstater replaces one of two ERF 6 x4 chassis fitted with Holmes 750 twin-boom cranes and, when not supporting its bus fleet, will be used on commercial hire work.
