• US tyre manufacturer Goodyear has reported a 10.2% rise in quarterly sales to £1.62 billion, with nett income of £78 million. Although these results are well up on the firm's first quarter in 1988, the results were lower than analysts had expected.
• The Transport and General Workers' Union has voted to take industrial action at soft drinks distributor Coca Cola, but says it is holding "positive" talks with the company in a bid to avert a strike. The employees — including warehousemen, 800 drivers and their mates — are unhappy with Coca Cola's decision to ignore a national wages and conditions agreement at two new depots at Northampton and Enfield.
• A garage has been ordered to pay fines and costs of over EL 500 for overcharging for oil used in a vehicle service. Northallerton magistrates heard how Massingbird (Northallerton) charged for supplying four litres of oil for a Maestro van whose sump capacity is only 2.7 litres. The mechanic who conducted the service said he thought the engine was a 1600cc when in fact it was a 1300cc unit. The computer working out the bill calculated that the 1600 would have needed four litres, and charged accordingly.
• Steyr Trucks (UK) the company set up by SteyrDaimler-Puch to sell its Austrian-built trucks in Britain, has set up shop at Tanners Drive, Blakelands, Milton Keynes.
