ANTI•SPRAY KIT • A Clear Pass axle kit has been added to the GKN Truckparts range of vehicle spray suppression flaps.

The ready-to-fit kit has been designed to reduce the formation and emission of vehicle spray, using a simple system of flaps and valances lined with polyethylene bristles. These trap the water thrown up by tyres, returning most of the spray back onto the road. The kit comprises: one pair of 610mm x 1067mm flaps; one pair of 203mm x 1219mm valances; and all necessary fittings. There is a Clear Pass kit for every standard make of trailer and HGV, but it can also be adapted.

HANDS Off ARTEMIS • Artemis is a hands-free, automatic alarm system for vehicles. Devised by Transalarm, the equipment comprises a vehicle-mounted control unit with a miniature transmitter, carried by the driver. When a driver leaves a vehicle, the Artemis automatically arms the intruder alarm system and locks the doors.

If a potential thief enters the vehicle, the detector sounds a siren and can also be adapted to send an alarm signal to the base station. After 10 seconds the alarm can then immobilise the vehicle, activate a white smoke cannister under the engine, and flash the headlights.

SOUTHAMPTON CHAIR • A new European Chair in automotive engineering is to be established at the Institute of Sound and Vibration at Southampton University.

The post will be sponsored by Iveco Ford and the Fellowship of Engineering and the new professor will undertake research, teaching and consultancy on automotive systems; and design in relation to noise pollution and vehicle vibration.

TOURISM AT HOME • The Confederation of British Industry has arranged a conference on 15 September in London to show how firms can benefit from welcoming visitors to factory and process sites.

Entitled "Visitors — Who needs Them", the conference will include talks from the Minister of Tourism John Lee and Ford Motor Company.

• Motorists using the M4 heading into London are warned that the section between junction three at A312 The Parkway to junction one, east of Chiswick Roundabout, will be closed from 21:00hrs on Friday 29 July to 06:00hrs on Monday 1 August.

HANGER LANE UNDERPASS • Maintenance work on the A40 Western Avenue will require occasional night-time closures of the Hanger Lane Underpass. These closures will start at 21:00hrs and finish at 06:00hrs the following day.

During westbound carriageway closures, diverted traffic will be able to continue along Western Avenue via surface level slip roads. When the eastbound carriageway is closed, traffic should travel along slip roads and the Hanger Lane Gyratory system.

Closing dates in the near future include: the Westbound carriageway closed on 7 September, 26 October and 7 December; and Eastbound closures on 28 July, 8 September, 27 October and 8 December.

A30 OPENS UP • The A303 Ilminster bypass in the South West, and the A30 bypass in Okehampton, Devon are now open. The two roads have been completed in time for the holiday rush.

BRIDPORT BYPASS • The 25 million A35 Bridport bypass in Dorset is now open. The new 7.3m-wide single-carriageway road runs south of Bridport between Miles Cross and the B3157 at Sea Road South roundabout.
