• Contracts to haul up to 1.5 million tonnes of coal a year could be up for grabs to west of Scotland hauliers when a Northern Ireland power station comes on line in the 1990s.
British Coal will supply the Kilroot Two station from open cast mines in Ayrshire.
It already sells 500,000 tonnes a year to the existing power station, Kilroot One, and it is believed that many of the contracts to take the extra coal to ports will go to road hauliers rather than be put on the railway.
