Portuguese UMM arrives in Britain

A REFINED VERSION of the original French-built Cournil 4x4 light vehicle (CM November 15, 1980) called the UMM has returned to Britain.
It is built in Portugal by Uniao Metalo-Mecanica of Lisbon, and is a robust all-wheel drive vehicle with a 2,565mm (101in) wheelbase. It is powered by a 2.3 litre 49kW (67bhp) Peugeot diesel engine driving through fourspeed ZF synchromesh gearbox and high and low range transfer case.
The all-steel construction UMM is available in Britain in right-hand drive as a Station Wagon, metal hard top or pickup with a canvas tilt. Sole importer is Transterrain of Ely, Cambridgeshire, which has appointed over 40 British dealers including a number of Peugeot franchises.
A total of between 100 and 120 dealers is envisaged by Transterrain, which sees the utilitarian vehicle competing in the Land-Rover class popular with farmers and construction companies.
Price for the Station Wagon is £8,609, while the metal hard top and pick-up sell at £7,613 and £7,325 respectively. All prices include vat.
LIGHT VEHICLE bodybuilder Walkers of Watford has extended its range of glass reinforced plastic Truckman Top pick-up canopies with two new models designed specifically for Bedford's KB26 4x2 and KB41 4X4 pick-ups.
The one-piece moulded canopies provide a 3,64cum (130cuft) load volume space, and are supplied with a large gasoperated tailgate fitted with tinted safety glass as standard.
Optional equipment includes wire mesh in the rear door for livestock transportation, and side windows can also be specified, although this makes the vehicle liable to normal car tax.
Canopy exteriors are finished in either white or metallic grey and prices start at £490 plus vat. Truckman tops are available through Walkers or from Bedford commercial vehicle dealers.
