• A call for the appointment of a transport officer to concentrate on the problems of rural bus services in Cumberland was turned down last week.

Cllr Stephen Murray suggested the idea at a meeting of the county council in Carlisle. He said that a transport officer would he able to concentrate all his time on rural bus services and perhaps would b able to come up with ways of helping t solve the problem of uneconomic service and high fares.

But Cllr Tom Dobie told the meeting tha the council had no control over fares so tha it was unlikely that a transport officer wouli be able to improve the situation.
