• The Portstew art Lorry Driver of the Year competition will take place despite the troubles in Ulster. This was announced this week after the local committee had contacted the security forces. The competition will be held on Saturday, September 2, and will start from a disused aerodrome near Coleraine. Manoeuvring tests will be at Shackleton Barracks, Ballykelly, the headquarters of the Royal Green Jackets. There is an entry of 120 and the Army has agreed to release eight drivers to compete. The committee is also arranging a separate manoeuvring competition within the barracks for soldiers who are on standby duty.
