Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

RATE-CUTTING by some contractcarriage operators in the West Riding is alleged. The causes are stated to be the entry of many newcomers into a field open to anyone who can obtain a coach, the lifting of fuel restrictions, and a falling-off in the demand for private-party outings in consequence of reduced public spending power.

One operator has asserted that some concerns, not all small ones, were cutting, private-party prices below the level of fares for licensed excursions. He also alleged that there were cases where operators had broken the law by paying 5 per cent. commissions to organizers of private parties. "So many additional vehicles came into the private-hire field during the post-war -boom in coaching that there are now too many for the work available," he added.

The annual report of the Yorkshire Area of the Passenger Vehfcle Operators' Association stated that operators in various towns and localities had had separate meetings and agreed on rates for private hire. "which in the main have been adhered to by members and non-Members." The need for further meetings is stressed. .

SAVING MORE DOLLARS .

AN arrangement whereby Caltex (U.K.), Ltd., a subsidiary of the California Texas Oil Co., is to purchase oil tankers built in British shipyards, will, it is estimated, result in an annual saving to this country of between 0,000,000 and 40,000,000 dollars.

The plan submitted by the oil company to the Ministry of Fuel and Power covered the use of crude oil produced in Bahrein, making payments partly in sterling for crude oil purchased from the Arabian American Oil Company and converting, over a fixed period, freight charges to a sterling basis.
