Hotel Cabs.
Mr. Lloyd George, in the House of Commons on the 19th inst., was asked how often motorcars or motorcabs would have to stand on a public stand in order to claim the rebate of 14d. per gallon in the spirit duty. No reply was given at the time.
hater, on the 21st inst., Mr. Lloyd George stated that no objection is raised by the Board of Customs and Excise to the grant of the rebate in rases where a motoreab which usually stands or plies for hire in a public place is hired from the yard at which it is kept, and sent out upon the ordinary terms applicable to vehicles plying for hire.
-It is probable that, in certain cases where cabs are primarily used to ply for hire, the owners will incident:illy be allowed to undertake a considerable proportion of hotel-hire work without sacrificing the 11d. per gallon, but we can quite understand the Chancellor's unwillingness to open the gates to the granting of the 50-per-cent. rebate to all private-hire vehicles. The, Exchequer would suffer a not-inconsiderable lass without good reason.
