A cheque for £500, a gold watch, and the best wishes of his colleagues were, at the Hotel Great Central, on the 19th inst., the deserved farewell evidences of the Motor Union's good feelings towards its late Secretary, Mr. W. Rees Jeffreys, who is now Secretary of the Road Board.

Bolton Prosecutions.

Are we to see some relaxation in the behaviour of the Bolton police and magistrates, and will the iniquitous fines upon mater drivers in that Lancashire town cease: There are some indications, if we may judge from the proceedings at Bolton on the 19th inst. Damen, Blackburn and Preston drivers appear to suffer most, but Mr. T. W. Grace, a weil-known Manchester solicitor, was successful in obtaining, for the first time, the virtual dismissal of an excess-axleweight summons, the excess amounting to 3 cwt. only, on payment of costs; another driver was fined 20s. and costs, These fines compare with previous ones of as much as £10.

Severe Usage.

A " Commer-Car " vehicle, on Friday morning last., in trying to avoid collision with a traction engine, was turned by its driver into a ditch, on the Bromley Road (Kent). In spite of the severe impact which followed, and external evidences of damage, the quick fitting of new parts enabled the machine to go on its way as though nothing had happened. The Lacre vehicle illustrated on page 413 of our issue of last week is not, we are requested to point out, one of that company's 1910 type.

Aberdeen's Invitation.

Industrial Aberdeen is making a. bid for additional factories in its midst, and the Town Clerk has sent to us an excellently-prepared 24-page booklet with statistical, ground-plan, shipping, rating, communication and other information.

Avoid Excessive Speed.

The Scottish A.C. has issued a manifesto in which drivers of motorcars are exhorted to avoid excessive speeds or inconsiderate driving. We should have been pleased to see a paragraph in this circular for the special admonition of motorvan drivers.

Motors Preferred.

The Municipality of Lyons has, after considerable trials, decided to use motor dust carts, on the ground that a daily clearance of refuse, etc., is thus rendered possible, compared with collections on alternate days only when horses were employed. The Municipality is also acquiring motor watering carts, on the ground that they are much less expensive to work.

St. Helens Rubber.

The annual bowling competition, in connection with the works of the St. Helens Cable and Rubber Co., Ltd., at Warrington, took place, on the 23rd inst., on the new green at the works, when there were 84 entries. Messrs. T. 0. Callender and James Taylor, directors, presented sets of bowls as prizes. It is interesting to note that the new green, which has accommodation for six lots of players, was constructed by the staff and workmen, without expense to the company, early in the present year. This arrangement, we should think, is unique in any rubber works. The Brussels Congress.

Delegates and other intending visitors to the forthcoming second Inter national Roads Congress at Brussels, which will continue practically the whole of next week, will find the express services of the South-Eastern and Chatham Railway the most-convenient means of communication. Connections to Brussels, via Calais, are made by the 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. services from London, whilst the same direct communication, via Ostend, is obtainable by the 9 a.m., 2.20 and 9 p.m. trains. Turnham of 2, Charing Cross, S.W., is arranging a special group to leave Charing Cross at 2.20 p.m. on Saturday next. Mr. Fredk. R. Simms has been elected President of the American Simms Magneto Co.—capital $1,000,000.

Turkey in Asia.

The development of individual motor services in the near East will largely depend upon the route of the Bagdad railway. The British ViceConsul at Adana believes that good roads will be established, and that the profitable use of commercial motors will be possible.
