AS THE WORKPLACE of someone doing an exacting job, the driver's cab deserves close study in design and construction, but it is also attracting attention in high academic circles. The application of plastics composites in ERF cab technology has been chosen by the Open University and the BBC as part of an MSc course sponsored by the Science and Engineering Research Council and supported by two industrial training boards.

Norman Cook, ERF's senior cab engineer, and Harry Knight, managing director of ERF Plastics, will appear during eight 25-minute television programmes, which will begin next October.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Edinburgh has presented Merrick Taylor, managing director of Motor Panels, Europe's largest independent commercial vehicle cab designer and manufacturer, with the Royal Society of Arts presidential award for design management. The Motor Panels Hemi-Tech cab, which is a thing of beauty as well as a highly functional workplace, has already won a Design Council award.

The lorry driver is clearly the man of the moment.
