Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LOCAL residents and councillors are fighting Strathclyde Region's action to stop an independent bus service authorised last year by former Transport Secretary David Howell.

Strathclyde is to raise an appeal in the Court of Session on February 7 in a bid to have McGill's Bus Services' Auchenback-Glasgow service stopped (CM August 27, 1983), but residents claim the private hourly service is cheaper and faster than longer established services. It is more convenient than a subsidised rail link.

Already some 1,300 passengers have signed a protest petition. More than 500 residents attended a public meeting to object to the region's proposal, and now Renfrew District Council's planning committee has joined with Barrhead Community Council in condemning Strathclyde's actions.

While Strathclyde believes the Barrhead-Glasgow rail service will be threatened, Renfrew District heard that figures show no decrease in rail passengers since McGill's service started.
