PLANS for transportation in the proposed new town of Runcorn (estimated eventual population 90,000) aim at designing for the motor age. The Runcorn Development Corporation intends to take positive steps to overcome the decline in the use of public transport, and plans a rapid transit system in the form of a figure eight to form the spine of the new town.
Everyone will live within five minutes
walk or mile from the rapid transit line. While the system could take the form of a monorail investigations to date indicate that it will most likely be a special road used solely by buses "of a new type".
The "new type" envisaged is a one-man operated single-decker with low-floor and wide easy access entrance, permitting the construction of lower overbridges. The buses would be provided by Crosville Motor Services Ltd., operating a very high frequency.
