DISTRIBUTIVE workers in the baking industry are recommended for a special interim pay rise of 12s. a week under the report of the National Board for Prices and Incomes, published last week. It is intended to tide them over until there is a complete revision of the wages structure in the industry in a few months' time. The increase represents another 3.3 per cent for van salesmen and 3.2 per cent for transport drivers.
The report was given a good reception by Mr. Jackson Moore, general secretary of the United Road Transport Union, which last year called a series of guerilla strikes in protest against the rejection of its claim.
"We assume that there is more money to come. I am interested in waiting to see what the next three months will bring", Mr. Jackson said. He was due to meet the employers this week.
The proposed increases, says the Board, should be a special interim payment, not to be added to the basic rate. It will therefore not help to push up overtime rates.
In fact, the Board wants the cost of the payment to be met by a two-hour reduction in the amount of overtime worked. Basic rates should be adjusted only when the whole wages structure had been revised.
