In the six mouths from April 1 to September 30, 1937, 6,995 buses, vans and lorries were imported into India, contrasted with 5,024 in the comparable period of 19361 The United States continues to secure approximately 50 per cent, of the trade, but the United Kingdom and Canada have both increased their share as regards quantity, although in the matter of value the position of the United Kingdom remains practically stationary.

Fined for Carrying Beer Without Delivery Notes.

Probably the first case concerning the carrying of intoxicating liquor in a van was heard at Eastleigh, when a driver was fined £.1 and the transport operator, Thomas A. Smith, F-astleigh, was fined 10s, for allowing a servant to convey intoxicating liquor in contravention of the Act.

A policeman spoke of stopping the van and requesting its driver to produce delivery notes respecting bottles of liquor. Memo slips were shown but no delivery book was produced.

Orders for only seven bottles were available, whereas 17 bottles of stout

were being carried. It was proved that standing orders were to be fulfilled, for which separate delivery notes were not considered essential.

It was explained that the object of the regulation was to prevent hawking. Smith had had no trouble in deliveries during 23 years of business.

The badge scheme is being sponsored by the company with the object of encouraging friendliness and road courtesy. No charge is made for the badge, but application must be made by the driver on an official card, countersigned by a responsible member of the company owning the vehicle. Application cards are obtainable from any Ford dealer, or from the Ford works direct.

Dunlop's Striking " Jubilee " Film.

In order to commernorate the jubilee of the pneumatic tyre, a particularly interesting film has been produced for the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd. It shows the transition from the age of coaches on steel tyres, hobby horses, etc., to the present era of motor vehicles and aeroplanes, and depicts in detail how the Dunlop pneumatic tyre, patented on July 23, 1886, came to be invented.

There are " shots of Brooklands, Dunlop plantations at Malaya, cotton mills at Rochdale and wheel works at Coventry. It includes even the first aeroplane flight by the Wright Bros.
