Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

week for the last two years I feel it is time for me to write to you with a problem which I am sure concerns hundreds of drivers like myself.

In October last year I upgraded my licence to Class One HGV at a personal cost of £450 for a five-day course with BRS Training Services, Erdington, Birmingham. Since then I have applied for countless driving vacancies only to be turned down due to lack of articulated experience. My question is, where do people get this experience from? Are they born with it? Do they buy it from a shop? Or do they get it from actually doing the job? I am sure the latter is the correct answer.

If no company or haulage firm will give us a chance to prove what we are capable of how are we to get the experience they require to employ us?

I have held a clean licence for 18 years and a PSV for 14 years so I am not new to the job of driving for a living and I am sure I am speaking for hundreds of drivers when I ask "Where are all the new Class 1 drivers coming from if they are not given the chance to prove themselves?

So please, transport managers and personnel managers who read this magazine, spare a thought for our problem when you next consider turning a driver down due to lack of experience.
