Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Last year the Cummins Engine Company held its number one position as the leading engine manufacturer in the 29 tonne-plus heavy truck market with a 22% stake — up 0.3% on its 1985 share.

During 1986 Cummins engines were fitted to 3,212 trucks above 29 tonnes. The overall market sector fell slightly to 14,579 vehicles. Volvo was in second place with its TD101 engine, fitted in 2,884 trucks.

For the second year running, the L10 was the most popular heavy truck engine in the UK: in 1986 Cummins' 10 litre accounted for 14.8% of all heavy truck engines specified in the 29 tonne-plus sector. Since its launch in late 1982 some 6,595 LIO engines have been installed in UK-built trucks, with Leyland, ERF, Seddon Atkinson, Iveco Ford and Foden offering it in a number of variants.

In the 1986 29 tonne-plus tractive unit market Cummins' share increased slightly to 21.7%, with 2,679 vehicles specified with Cummins engines out of a total sector market of 12,341 trucks. That was despite a dip in the UK manufacturers' share of the tractive unit market.

Some 71% of all UK-built tractive units were specified with Cummins engines, while for the first time Cummins has taken more than half of Ley

land's 29 tonne-plus tractive unit registrations with a 50,7% share, In the 29 tonne-plus rigid chassis market, Cummins' share improved to 23.8% — Cummins engines were specified in 533 four-axle trucks in a sector that totalled 2,238 vehicles.

Since production of 'B' Series engines began at Darlington late last year, 469 engines have been installed in UK-built trucks, including 92 in ERF E6 chassis.

Cummins has also increased its penetration in the PSV market. Its 'B' and 'C' Series engines are now being specfled for MCW and Dennis chassis respectively.
