IS A fallacy to suggest that eavier lorries will lead to vast xpenditure on Britain's ridges, Freight Transport Assoiation director-general Hugh eatherstone said this week.
Speaking in Perth, he said that ritics of the Armitage Report re still suggesting that it will ost around £1350m to rebuilt le country's bridges if the ecommendations are adopted. But Mr Featherstone said this igure referred to the EEC propoals for heavier vehicles, with ieavier axle weights, and )ointed out that Armitage reacted that package in favour of )ne which involves no bridge itrengthening.
He added: ''Similarly, the rdoption of the Armitage propo>als would not result in an in:rease in road damage, but a vorthwhile decrease.
"Reductions in road damage around five to ten per cent Nouid be expected, which in .urn would mean actual reduc.ions in maintenance."
