Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NEW couplings standards published by the British Standards Inst tution aim at greater safety, take account of changes in norm; practice since earlier regulations were issued, and clarify certai details particularly with regard to the operation of the self-sealin valves.

BS AU 138a, which refers to dimensions of "contact" type couplings for air pressure braking systems on trailers and semi-trailers and their towing vehicles, and the arrangemer of these couplings on articulati and drawbar combination supersedes earlier standards this field BS AU 5: 1963 (e cept in regard to its applicatil to vacuum brake systems) al BS AU 138: 1967.

The latter is now withdrawn.

"Contact" type couplings C more commonly known as Ca CA bayonet types, and the fol of coupling specified in the n■ standard refers to the approv method for use on vehicles fu ing a twoor three-line pressure brake system.

The standard has a bearing safety, since couplings of t type cannot be cross-connect and will only fit the mati coupling for which they are tended.

Copies of BS AU 138a may obtained from BSI Sales Dem ment, 101 Pentonville Ro London Ni 9ND, price £6 (I subscribing members f3).
