It was feared that group training associations and company training centres would have to close down. There could, therefore, be a serious shortfall when the economy picks up.

Now the Board has decided to make a preservation grant available for at least two years and paid as a quarterly sum of £350 per training place. To qualify for the grant, organizations con cerned will have to maintain full training facilities including staff.

The annual cost of the grant is estimated at £1.66 million.

In addition, the board has proposed an increase in the running cost grant to driver training centres. The increase will be from £10.50 to £15 for Class I and 2 vehicles, and from E8 to £12.50 for Class 3 vehicles to group training associations. For company training, the rates are to be increased from £5 to £14 for all hgvs.

The estimated additional cost will be £490,000 a year to be met from key grant funds and levy.

The Board is seeking a review of the Manpower Services Commission financial contribution to offset these proposals.
