Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

a container is damaged while it is under Customs seal, is there a special procedure to be taken by the road vehicle operator?

AThere are no regulations regarding repair

of TIR containers but it is anticipated that regulations will be promulgated in due course covering the repair of all types of ISO container.

The operator who is handling a container is responsible for any damage that is incurred while it is in his possession, and he should therefore make a careful inspection of the unit before he accepts it and before he hands it over. In this country, the only circumstance in which an operator would normally be responsible for damage to a container under bond relates to the time it is being transferred from a docks to an inland container port. If damage is incurred it should be reported immediately to the Customs office at the port. There are no specific regulations regarding the manner in which the report should be made.

A Customs and Excise officer can demand that a damaged container be unloaded for inspection of the load if the damaga is such that unauthorized entry might have been possible and that it be repaired before it is reloaded. If a damaged container passes through a number of frontier posts the load is subject to the normal Customs examinations.
