Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Hawick, Murray

• A. and G. W. Murray, builders, of Hawick, were granted an application for a B licence at Edinburgh on Monday with a radius of 30 miles surrounding Hawick. They applied for general goods within 40 miles.

Mr. Alex Murray, principal of the firm, said that his company had an existing 4-ton tipper which carried building materials to jobs on hand. It was often asked by customers in the more remote areas around Hawick either to return with goods or to bring goods out from Hawick. Estate owners and farmers were mainly involved in these requests which the firm had to refuse.

The country position had been made more difficult in recent times by withdrawal of country bus services on some routes, notably the Borthwick Valley, where the parcel carrying service had ceased.

The firm had other vehicles but would prefer a B licence for this tipper to allow its periodic use when travelling to and from jobs. Mr. Murray said that he had no intention of becoming a contractor, as there was more than enough building work on hand. Nevertheless, ability to carry occasional loads would be advantageous.

The LA, Mr. A. B. Birnie, queried the proposed radius which would allow carriage of goods to Edinburgh or Carlisle; presumably these were not destinations to which he wanted to go. Mr. Murray confirmed that these were outside his intended area and accepted the 30-mile limit proposed.

There were no objections.
