Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I NCREASED availability and demand for long-distance day tours was the reason for an application to the West Midland Traffic Commissioners on Friday by Mr. William Anderton (Andy's Coaches), of Birmingham, to add about 50 new excursions and tours to his licence.

Mr. D. Skelding, for Mr. Anderton, announced that objections by the British Railways Board and a number of coach operators had been met and so withdrawn. The application was granted, together with a doubled vehicle allowance for Easter and Whitsun and the removal of certain pick-up point restrictions. Mr. J, Else, chairman, said the fares would be the standard Birmingham fares in all cases.

Mr. Anderton said in evidence that the extension of motorways, dual-carriageway improvements and more efficient vehicles had made such places as Margate, Great Yarmouth and Scarborough possible centres for day excursions.
