Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An applicant at a sitting of the Northern Scotland Licensing Authority intimated that he would appeal against the Authority's decision. Mr. Malcolm M'Leod, June, who said that he was a oontracthr for the Department of Agriculture, from Ness to Stornoway, applied for a licence for a 2-ton vehicle, instead of a 30-wt. machine, to enable him to fulfil the contract and at the same time to carry on his own work.

The application was opposed by a number of operators in the district. Mr. M'Leod was offered a contract licence for the Department of Agriculture work, whilst retaining his present vehicle for his ordinary work, but he maintained that this arrangement would be unsatisfactory. The application was refused.

Stronger Support in Parliament.

Capt. W. F. Strickland, M.P. was the -principal _guest, last Saturday, at the 11th annual dinner of John Morton and Sons, Ltd., the big Coventry haulage concern. Capt. Strickland, who is leader of the road-transport group in Parliament, said that since the general election, the industry was inuch better represented in the House.

Nearly 100 M.P.s have pledged themselves to support the industry, and organization is proceeding so that every phase of road transport shall have the attention of the group.

The dinner was attended by over 200 members of the staff of the Morton concern, Mr. John Morton, managing director, being in the chair. Mr. J. Foley Egginton, secretary of the West Midland Area of Associated Road Operators also spoke.

New Coal-oil Plant to be Erected.

A new coal-oil plant is to be established at Grange Colliery, Belmont, Co. Durham, by the Belmont Coal-Oil Co., Ltd.—a subsidiary concern at Coal-Oil Development (Great Britain). Ltd. The directors of the Belmont company are Messrs. W. McKeag (chairman), H. P. Hoyle "(managing director), Joseph Pease, F. B. Spencer and D. L. Crimp.

It is estimated that about 31 gallons of oil can be produced from a ton of Belmont coal, which is stated to be of poor quality. In better areas about 100 gallons of oil can be obtained from a ton of coal, but the company has decided to start operation at Belmont, on account of the distress in the neighbourhood.

The Freeman process will be used.

Ribble Capital Increase Approved.

At an extraordinary meeting of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., held at Preston a few days ago, sanction was given for the capitalization of £200,000 ot the company's reserve and its distribution as a capital bonus in the proportion of one share for every three held by the holders of the 600,000 E1 ordinary shares at present issued. This means increasing the capital from £800,000 to £1,000,000.
