Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TO REDUCE ROLLING of the vehicle when cornering or running on a steep camber is the object of patent No. 901,957. The scheme is particularly intended for an axle with air suspension. (Dunlop Rubber Co. Ltd., 1 Albany Street, London, N.W.1.)

The drawing shows a side view of the layout. The axle-casing carries a pair of platforms (1) which support air springs (2) fore and aft, and the chassis rests upon these springs. A source of compressed air and a self-levelling valve are incorporated.

Under each pair of springs is a lever (3), horizontally pivoted under the axle at 4 and extending forwards to another pivot (5) on the frame. These levers abut on the spring platforms via rubber blocks (6). He is a managing director of Morgan Grenfell and Co. Ltd., and a director of the General Electric Co. Ltd.. Mercantile Bank Ltd., Yule Catto and Co. Ltd., and various other companies.

Mr. H. G. Luteman, general manager of the merchandise and material control division of the Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co. (Great Britain) Ltd. since June, 1958, has been appointed director of management engineering. Mr. R. E. Gillis succeeds Mr. Luteman as general manager.

Following the appointment of Mr. F. E. Higham as director-general of the Motor Agents Association, reorganization is to take place in the Standard-Triumph Sales Division. Mr. J. K. S. Carpenter is appointed general sales manager and Mr. A. C. L. Mills takes over from Mr. Higham as head of home sales. Two new posts are being created—those of Northern and Southern Area sales managers—who will be responsible to Mr. Mills. The posts will be taken by Mr. R. Moore and Mr. P. Hennessy, respectively.

Fuel Control for Petrol Injection

PATENT No. 904,461 comes from Robert Bosch G.m.b.H., 4 Breitscheidestrasse, Stuttgart-W, Germany, and discloses a novel method of regulating the fuel in a petrol-injection engine. The quantity is controlled by the number of ignition sparks in a given time; this pf course is a direct function of engine speed. Full details are given of the transistorized circuit employed.

More than 50 years' service with A.E.C. and the L.G.O.C. were recalled at a luncheon party held to mark the recent retirement of Mr. A. S. C. Chattey from the board of Associated Commercial Vehicles Ltd. Mr. Chattey joined the L.G.O.C. as an apprentice in 1910. In 1919 he joined the experimental department of A.E.C. and thereafter occupied several posts on the sales side of the company. In 1952 he became managing director of A.C.V. Sales Ltd., and chairman in 1957. having joined the A.E.C. board in 1955. He was appointed to the board of the parent company in 1957.

Rapid Wheel-changing

PATENT No. 903,281 describes a I device for turning a whole set of wheel nuts simultaneously when changing a wheel. Each nut is formed into a pinion and a central sun-gear engages them all. A torque-limiting device may also be incorporated. The patent comes from R. Holbrow, Creek End, Burcot, Oxford.

Power Braking

EiROM Ford Motor Co. Ltd., 88 Regent Street, London, W.1, conies patent No. 904,816. This describes a: powerbraking system in which the servo-motor provides all the braking force, none being required from the driver. The chief subject of the patent is a fail-to-safety modification.

Obituary

WEregret to record the death of Mr. T. L. Turner. Mr. Turner, of Northwood, was formerly director and general manager of the Zenith Carburetter Co. Ltd. He was known throughout the motor trade and to all the buying and engineering departments of the motor vehicles manufacturers.
