THE accompanying illustration shows the Albion AZ.5 chassis, which has been designed for pay-loads up to 30 cwt., the normal gross weight being 75 cwt. for the standard machine. It has a four-cylindered petrol engine having a rated h.p. of 19.6, and gives 48 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m.

Pressed-in cylinder liners are adopted, and the exhaust-valve seats are also renewable. The crankshaft, which is of large section, is supported on three white-metal-lined bearings of generous area. It is a side-valved unit with the valves on the near side of the block. There are two compression rings and two scraper rings on the aluminiumalloy pistons.

Positive circulation of the cooling water is looked after by an impeller-type pump, which is driven in tandem with the dynamo on the near side of the unit.

A Zenith downdraught carburetter supplies the mixture, and coil ignition, with automatic advance and retard mechanism, is fitted as standard.

The power is taken through a clutch Of the single dry-plate type to a gearbox providing four forward speeds and the usual reverse. It has the following basic ratios: first 6.59, second 3.24, third 171 and top 1 to 1. Reverse is 8.38 to I.

A two-piece Hardy-Spicer needleroller type propeller shaft, with selfaligning centre bearing and torsion damper, conveys the drive to a spiralbevel-driven rear axle with fully floating shafts. Suspension is by semi-elliptic springs, those at the rear being 4 ft. 2 ins, long, and those at the front 3 ft. long.

Braking is by Lockheed hydraulically operated Girling 2LS-type shoes in the rear drums, and Lockheed slotted type shoes in front. The hand brake, of Course, controls cnly the rear-wheel brakes. Brakedrum diameter' is 14 ins:, the facing being 11 ins. wide on the front shoes and 3 ins. wide on the rear ones.

Standard equipment consists of -6-in. by 20-in. R H.S. low-pressure tyres, with twins at the rear.

A constant voltage 12-volt lighting set, including five lamps, is provided, both an electric starter and mechanical tyre pump being extra fittings, for which provision is made on the engine and gearbox respectively.

The Albion AZ.5 has a 9-ft. 9-in. wheelbase, a clearance under the rear axle of 74 ins., and a turning circle of 42 ft.
