By Chris Tindatt DRIVERS AND OPERATORS covered by domestic driving hours legislation have expressed "grave concern" after the Government has confirmed it will begin reviewing the regulations this autumn.

The rules cover drivers not included in the ELJ Drivers' Hours directive, and mainly apply to essential public services carried out by the utilities sector, highways maintenance and local authorities.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has said a review will begin shortly. The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has adopted a cautious stance, but it admits it has been contacted by worried members t demanding to know why it is happening.

t. The FTAs head of road freight policy, z .2 Joan Williams, says: "We will he going into the review with an open mind, looking at the evidence and assisting the DfT to provide information to help determine any issues that require change."

The FTA says driver safety, working conditions, fair competition, the difference between Great Britain's and Northern Ireland's domestic hours rules and cutting the regulatory burden will be looked at.

A DfT spokesman says: The aim of the review is to look at the effectiveness of the current regime. This evidence will be used to consider if there is any case for change."
