0 n these days of the "Me" society it gladdens the Hawk's heart to hear of ventures such as the Save the Children Fund's, A Truck for Africa.

On 8 September three young teachers and an accountant— Amanda Harvey, Jo Gordan, Pete Spratling and Tristan Steinmann—will set off to drive 9,000 miles overland to Binga in Zimbabwe in a Bedford MKP four-wheel drive truck.

With the help of local Watkins HGV mechanic Rob Farr, the group has overhauled and adapted the truck ready to begin its new life in Africa.

As part of the Save the Children's dam and well-building programme, the truck will help to provide a clean and plentiful supply of water for the local area. Michelin Tyres is donating seven off-road tyres worth £2,100. So far the group has raised £6,000 but needs to find £14,000 in all. They are looking for sponsorship, donations or goods from companies who would like to help make this expedition a success.
