Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A runaway wheel from a 17-tonne lorry bounced across the carriageway into the path of an elderly driver on the A14 in Barrow, Suffolk, last week.

The Mercedes skiploader, driven by Sean Whitehead of Cherry Hinton, Cambridgeshire, was travelling west on the dual-carriageway when the wheel came loose.

Mary Braithwaite, 79, suffered a fractured sternum and bruising and spent a few days in hospital after the wheel hit her car head on. The matter is being investigated by Suffolk police but no decision has yet been taken on whether to prosecute.

Bird deaths tot up to 60 million

• As many as 60 million birds are killed by vehicles on British roads each year, says the British Trust for Ornithology. It estimates there is a bird death for every 7,000km of the 400bn km travelled annually on the road network.

Common casualties include the house sparrow, blackbird, song thrush, pheasant and sparrow.
