announced on Wednesday by the Clayton Dewandre Co.. Ltd., 1.incoln, allows a normal hydraulic braking system to be converted simply to vacuum-servo operation. It is designed for light commercial vehicles.

The apparatus employs manifold depression and is, therefore, suitable only for petrol-engined vehicles. It consists of a power chamber containing a diaphragm and a push-rod which operates a piston in an integrally cast hydraulic cylinder, controi being effected by a hydraulically actuated vacuum and atmosphere valve.

To incorporate the servo in a normal system it is necessary only to cut the hydraulic brake line, make two connections and join the vacuum line for the servo to a tapping on the intake manifold.

The servo is said to give a fully progressive action and allows normal hydraulic braking when, for example, the engine stalls. In a typical installation the servo provides an increase in braking effect at pedal pressures up to 45 lb. in lhe order of 70 per cent., as compared with an unassisted system.

NEW TYRE WFOORMOTORWAY RK ANEW tyre for heavy goods vehicles, designed with the requirements of high-speed running on motorways in mind, was announced on Wednesday by Henley's Tyre and Rubber Co.. Ltd. It is known as the Maxi Miler and has a flat tread with a ribbed pattern. The tread compound has been improved.

To counteract heat build-up caused by higher running speeds on motor roads, the buttresses are slim and tapering. This form of construction also spreads the stresses created in the shoulder area over a greater length tat sidewall. The buttresses terminate in a kerbing rib.

LONDON BUSMEN MILITANT

DELEGATES representing 35,000 busmen from garages serving Central London met on Wednesday to discuss higher pay and shorter hours.

The meeting had before it a resolution from the committee representing Central bus workers, which demanded that claims for a a week rise and a substantial cut in the 84-hour fortnight be put forward, The committee were prepared to back these claims by a call for the reimposition of a ban on overtime and rest-day working, which it was suggested should start from October 1.

MORE Al IMPROVEMENTS rONSTRUCTION of the Wentbridge by-pass on the Great North Road in the West Riding is to start immediately. The Minister of Transport has approved the letting of a contract costing £741,807 for the building of nearly two miles of 24-ft. dual carriageway.

The project—which involves construction of a new bridge over the-River Went will eventually link with schemes to improve the Al road between Redhouse and Ferrybriclge and Wentbridge.
