-THE, Tees-side and South West 1 Durham Chamber of Commerce have sent a letter to their members drawing attention to certain irregular road haulage operations.
These, say the chamber, appear to take two principal forms: (1) The abuse of C-licence hiring margins to circumvent the 25-mile limit, and (2) the use of vehicles for hire or reward without either the proper licence, or a permit to carry beyond a radius of 25 miles, "the latter operations being in anticipation of certain provisions of the Transport Act, 1953, which are not yet in force." .
Members are warned that the continued abuse of C licences might lead to irksome restrictions being imposed on all ancillary vehicles, and that it is a question of "enlightened self. interest " for traders to refuse to patronize_ hauliers indulging in the abuse. If unlicensed vehicles are hired, or vehicles are hired from an operator who does not hold a permit for journeys outside of 25 miles, a more serious and immediate problem arises, says the letter.
The Chamber add that they are "reliably informed that certain prosecutions may follow in the near future and that traders whose traffic has been illegally carried may be implicated in such court proceedings."
